One of the big challenges facing agents selling LTCi today is the bad press the products have been receiving of late. A recent study commissioned by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services should put most fears to rest. The simple fact is that in 2006 more than $3.5 billion was paid by long-term care insurance companies to policyholders to help them avert personal financial disaster. So just like so much other misinformation that we read in our daily newspapers agents and consumers need to be mindful of who’s agenda is being served by overtly negative stories about inappropriate claims practices. Bad news sells. Also, the trial attorney lobby believes that it has discovered a new set of deep pockets for frivolous lawsuits.
Today, long-term care insurance is one of the most heavily regulated products in the history of insurance. Most of the complaints being filed against insurance companies deal with policies sold in a bygone era. Today’s State and Federal regulations make benefit payments for legitimate claims a reasonably simple and straighforward process.
